Detection of gastroenteritis viruses in Japan, 2011/12 season (as of November 8, 2012)

  In Japan, prefectural and municipal public health institutes (PHIs) report detection of infectious agents from specimens collected by sentinel clinics and hospitals under the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, other medical institutions and health centers.
  From gastroenteritis cases, norovirus and other viruses (sapovirus, rotavirus, astrovirus etc.) are detected.

  In 2011/12 season, based on the Individual Case Report from week 36 of 2011 to week 35 of 2012 (week of specimen collection), norovirus GII detections from 2,369 cases in 45 prefectures (including GII/4 from 500 cases, GII/2 from 88 cases, GII/13 from 82 cases, GII/12 from 42cases, GII/3 from 29 cases, GII/6 from 26 cases, GII/5 from 9 cases, GII/7 from 4 cases, GII/14 from 3 cases, GII/17 from 2 cases, and GII/1 from one case) were reported with two peaks at week 50 of 2011 and week 3 of 2012. Group A rotavirus detections from 769 cases in 36 prefectures (including genotype G1 from 194 cases, G3 from 65 cases, G9 from 43 cases, G2 from 22 cases and G12 from one case) were reported with a peak at weeks 15-17 of 2012.
